Our Principal, Kate McInnes, was instructed to draft a joint letter to the UN Security Council missions addressing the escalating hostilities in Afghanistan between Pakistan and the Taliban regime. The letter has been endorsed by over 50 Afghan civil society organisations, including HRD+, CSHRN, and OMCT.
Pakistan’s disproportionate attacks on Afghanistan since 26 February 2026 have deepened the already dire humanitarian crisis experienced by the people of Afghanistan. Meanwhile, the Taliban regime, as the country’s undemocratic de facto authorities, have persistently failed, at a minimum, to prevent Afghanistan from being used as a base for cross-border violence by groups such as the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan.
Taken together, these actions constitute prima facie violations of Article 2(4) of the UN Charter and present an imminent threat to international peace and security. In our respectful submission, this warrants urgent action by the Security Council.
Afghan civil society stands ready to represent the Afghan people before the Security Council, and Arendt Chambers look forward to facilitating engagement with each mission on this matter.
